On March 4, 2014, my husband and soulmate, the love of my life, Brett Roberts, lost his brave battle to a very rare cancer, cholangiocarcinoma. April 24, 2013 (the 31st anniversary of our first date in college) was the day we shockingly learned Brett had cancer. Devastated, we immediately reached out to our wonderful network of friends and they ALL recommended Dr. Hank Kaplan. We were SO very blessed and grateful to have Dr. Kaplan as Brett's oncologist. In early May, we learned from Dr. Kaplan that it was this horrid, terminal cancer with no chance for remission. Without treatment, Brett had 1-3 months to live ... with treatment we could hope for a year or so. Yes, we were shattered but we would fight; Brett maintained his positive attitude throughout the entire battle, never complained. Brett continued to work for BOEING as much as he could and his body would allow. Dr. Kaplan and ALL of the Swedish staff gave us that precious almost-year ... we will be forever grateful to them all !! Their care and concern were absolutely awesome ... but it is Dr. Kaplan that we were/are the most grateful for! We have never come across another physician with the profound dedication, compassion and excellence which Hank showed us daily. This amazing physician and man works so hard for his patients ... we always worried that Dr. K rarely slept or enjoyed family time. Dr. Kaplan made us feel like we were the VIP of his many patients and Brett trusted him in every way, through every step of his fight ... Dr. Kaplan was the COACH of our Team Roberts and called the shots !! Brett adored and respected this fine man in every way, our entire family did. Hank would visit Brett once-twice a day with every hospitalization; it would be such a comfort to hear his footsteps and see his warm smile. Dr. K's phone calls checking on Brett were always so appreciated as well.
Brett, an awesome and very proud father, leaves behind two precious daughters, Caitlin and Sarah, as well as his dear parents, in-laws, his brother and brother-in-law, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, countless friends and colleagues. We will miss Brett more than words can express ! Along with being an inspiration to us all as an amazingly strong warrior/fighter, he was such a KIND and POSITIVE man, a LIGHT in everyone's lives, and Brett truly impacted everyone he met. As his wife, I could not be more proud of the man I called my best friend and husband, the father of my children and my everything.
The year we were given with Brett was such a gift ... we cannot begin to express our appreciation to Dr. Kaplan, his staff and ALL of the Swedish health care professionals at Infusion, First Hill, Cherry Hill and Issaquah. I work at Swedish Issaquah and I am so proud to be part of this Swedish family.
I will love you and miss you forever, Brett !!
